Coleman Northstar Propane Lantern with Carrying Case - 2500-770 Review

Coleman Northstar Propane Lantern with Carrying Case - 2500-770I've collected Coleman lanterns for several years now. I've used quite a few different propane lanterns, and bought this because it was a new design and looked like it could take some abuse.

This lantern is by far the brightest I've seen. The only exception to that is if you use the optional yellow globe that's supposed to help keep bugs away. It seems to cut light output in half, but I guess that's why bugs don't see it as well!?

For me, this unit is kind of scary to start using the electronic ignition, as propane gas will collect in the globe during the 3-5 attempts it takes to get it going. You'll hear a "poof" and see a flash as this gas is burnt off. Obviously, if it doesn't light in the first few seconds, you should turn it off and let it sit for several minutes before trying again.

This year, my buddy and I were setting up camp, he used a thin twine to hoist this lantern up over a branch. About ten minutes later, the twine broke and the lantern fell to the hard dirt ground. We fully expected the globe to be shattered, but somehow, it was still in tact, no cracks or chips. We lit the lantern and it still worked fine. I was probably just really lucky, but I'm amazed it withstood a fall of about 10 feet.

This Coleman Propane Northstar Lantern does go through a 1 lb. disposable propane tank in one evening if you are the type to stay up late and tell stories by lantern light. If you are concerned about fuel efficency I'd look at the single or dual mantle Coleman lanterns. I also like using the liquid fuel lanterns as they seem to go forever on a tank, but using liquid-fueled lanterns is certainly not for everybody.
